COVER: Danger in the SUN. Cover: Photo by Ormond Gigli. Bathing suit by Gottex.

TOP OF THE WEEK [Major Top Stories]:
OUT IN THE NOONDAY SUN: This summer Americans will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the bikini with a renewed quest for that elusive "healthy tan"-ignoring warnings from dermatologists that there is no such thing.

One result of America's long infatuation with the sun is an epidemic of skin cancer, including a ten- fold increase in the rate of deadly malignant melanoma. Other evidence links sunbathing to a risk of cataracts, immune-system deficiencies-and plain old wrinkles. Many chronic tanners find it impossible to quit. (And some, like beautifully burnished actor George Hamilton, don't want to.) But others are prudently covering up with sunscreens, sunblocks, sunhats and parasols-and will be right in fashion if, as some predict, a healthy pallor ever returns to favor.

Lifestyle: Page 60. Cover-up: Return to pallor?.

UNDER SIEGE: Kurt Waldheim seemed to be headed for a victory in Austria's presidential election- despite continuing accusations about his wartime service in Hitler's Army. The revelations stunned many people who knew him as secretary-general of the United Nations. But with his reputation under attack, stories began to come out about the darker side of Waldheim's character. International: Page 30.

BEATING THE TAX BILL: Ready or not, here comes tax reform. Congress has not yet worked out the final details, but two things are clear: tax rates will be lower and some cherished loopholes will be eliminated. For millions of Americans who profited finding ways around the tax man, alternative investment strategies are now a necessity.

Here's how to kick the loophole habit-and profit from the coming tax bill. Business: Page 40.

CAN ANYTHING STAY SECRET? Ronald W. Pelton was a drunk, a drug user and a flop as a spy, but undersea secrets he is accused of selling the Soviets may have set a new mark for damage to his country. The opening of his trial last week touched off a new ruckus over government leaks to the media. National Affairs: Page 16.

FLYING HIGH: The '80s generation has found its all-American hero: TOM CRUISE, a conscientiously polite and determined young star whose boyish, can-do appeal has sent "Top Gun" soaring at the box office. The Arts: Page 72. Breaking tradition: Cruise.
