Vintage original 9x12 in. US exhibitor's and trade advertisement for the popular 1990's comedy/drama biopic, ED WOOD, released in 1994 by Touchstone Pictures and directed by Tim Burton. Because of his eccentric habits and bafflingly strange
films, director Edward D. Wood Jr. (Johnny Depp) is a Hollywood outcast.
Nevertheless, with the help of the formerly famous Bela Lugosi (Martin Landau) and a
devoted cast and crew of show-business misfits who believe in Ed's off-kilter
vision, the filmmaker is able to bring his oversize dreams to cinematic life.
Despite a lack of critical or commercial success, Ed and his friends manage to
create an oddly endearing series of extremely low-budget films.
Issued to publicize the upcoming release of this film, this brochure/trade advertisement features a great show of Johnny Depp as Ed Wood Jr., seen in black-and-white except for the bright pink angora sweater he's wearing along with a pair of women's high heel shoes as he holds his director's megaphone. It opens to reveal three pages of credits and one page of black-and-white portraits of the main characters including Bela Lugosi (Martin Landau); Criswell (Jeffrey Jones); Dolores Fuller (Sarah Jessica Parker); Bunny Breckenridge (Bill Murray); Kathy O'Hara (Patricia Arquette); Vampira (Lisa Marie); and Tor Johnson (George "The Animal" Steele).
The front cover was signed in black Sharpie by cast member Max Casela (who portrayed Paul Marco) thusly: "To Eric - and everyone - at Hollywood - Book & Poster - Best Wishes! Max Casella (Paul Marco)". The brochure/trade advertisement is in very fine condition without any tears, stains, or other flaws. Silent Cinema Inc. (the seller here) guarantees the authenticity of Max Casella's inscription and signature.
Eric was Eric Caidin, the former owner of the former Hollywood Book & Poster shop on Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood. Eric was a prolific collector and meet numerous motion picture, television, and wrestling celebrities who would sign various items for him. Martin Landau's Academy Award for "Best Actor in a
Supporting Role" for his portrayal of Bela Lugosi marked the
first time in Oscar history that a performer in any category won for playing a
movie star. A decade later, Cate Blanchett won a "Best Actress
in a Supporting Role" Academy Award for her portrayal of Katharine
Hepburn in The Aviator (2004).
