Measures 5-7/32" X 7-5/8", 68+ pp, b&w illustrations by GEORGE PRICE, written by Steve Allen, stated "FIRST PRINTING," small glossy hardcover published 1955 by Simon and Schuster (NY).
Crazy, man -- dig this: in 1953, musician, writer, radio and TV performer Steve Allen rewrote a couple well-known children's fairy tales in the language of jazz musicians and beatniks, which were then published in DOWNBEAT magazine. Shortly thereafter, a New York disc jockey (Al "Jazzbo" Collins) read the stories on the radio, and the resulting acclaim necessitated that Steve and "Jazzbo" record the stories for a best selling record in 1955. Audiences still wanted more; and the result was this book, which includes the original two stories ('THREE MIXED-UP LITTLE PIGS" and "CRAZY RED RIDING HOOD"), but also GOLDILOCKS AND THE THREE COOL BEARS and JACK AND THE REAL FLIP BEANSTALK. So grab some vees, splash a little vino, get horizontal and prepare to be wigged out. Solid, man -- real solid.
