In 1958, my optometrist had asked me if I had ever read any books by Edgar Rice Burroughs, to which I had replied that I had read a few TARZAN novels.  And then he just smiled and shook his head, and told me about the amazing science faction novels that Edgar Rice Burroughs had also written, about Mars and Venus and the forgotten land inside the Earth called Pellucidar; and that many of these science fiction novels far surpassed any of the TARZAN novels.  But he also sadly acknowledged that nearly all of those novels were out of print, and that I might never get the chance to read them.

Fast forward four years to 1962, and I'm standing at the paperback rack at Ralph's Grocery Store in my home town, where every Thursday would find me, waiting for the new paperbacks and comic books to hit the spinners.  I'm 14 years old; and, "what to my wondering eyes should appear" but TWO Edgar Rice Burroughs paperback titles with which I was totally unfamiliar:  AT THE EARTH'S CORE and THE MOON MAID, with cover art that simply blew my mind.  I grabbed both books, forked over my 80 cents, and rushed home to bury myself inside two worlds of Edgar Rice Burroughs that were a far cry from Tarzan's Africa.

And, you know something?  My optometrist was right -- thanks, Dr. Schultz!
