Upon hearing of an allegedly lethal videotape in urban legend fashion, teen Katie (Amber Tamblyn) gets her hands on a copy and watches it with three of her friends. Immediately after viewing the tape, she gets a call telling her she will die in exactly one week. A week later all four teens are dead.

Katie's reporter aunt, Rachel (Naomi Watts), tries to get to the bottom of the mystery, but has only one week to do so after also viewing the tape. She is also racing to save her son (David Dorfman) and ex-husband Noah (Martin Henderson), who she has rather stupidly exposed to this Memorex of Mayhem.
