Nunney, Somerset, England. The market place circa 1910. I painted this watercolour in sepia tone, to echo the old photographs we often see.

It depicts the market place as it was in 1910 [ I have old photographs ], and indeed, apart from the trees and some windows of the cottages being slightly different, nothing else has changed.

Nunney is mentioned in the Domesday Book [ 1086 ], and was allowed to hold an annual fayre, authorised by Royal Grant in 1260 by Henry 111 . This tradition continues to this day, now held on the first Saturday in August.

Steeped in history, the name comes from 'Nunna' [ old English meaning  'Nunna's island' ]. Nunna was a Saxon chieftain. Occupation here goes back even earlier , - a hoard of Roman coins was found here, and discovered nearby was a Roman villa with a mosaic floor or pavement.
