Cheap Street, Frome, Somerset, England. I painted this picture in sepia tone to echo the old photographs we often see. What you see here is a medieval street that is unchanged, and still has the small shops selling artisan products, as has been done for hundreds of years.

I took my inspiration from a vintage photo i have, taken in c1900, and it accuratley shows the figures posing for the photograph. I love the character of the gentleman leaning against the wall on the left, no doubt about to lift the beer barrel onto the trolley you can see.

The 'leat' [ small stream] that runs down the centre of this traffic free street is particularly unusual, and still gets it's water from the ancient spring a little further up the slope. Small boys love to dip their shoes in this stream, and no doubt traders in past times washed their wares/clothes etc in the leat.
