Nunney, in the county of Somerset, UK.
This is the river, Nunney brook, looking down the river from the old bridge, towards the church. The backs of the medieval cottages can be seen on the right.
Nunney, mentioned in the Domesday Book [1086] has it's roots set deep in history, from Roman coins and ruins found locally, to the Saxon chieftain [ Nunna ] from whom Nunney gets it's name, to the building of the castle in 1373 [ which is just out of view to the right of my picture - see my other watercolours for a picture of the castle].
Buying this picture gives you a timeless piece of English history, and like all my pictures, one that has hardly changed over hundreds of years.
Every Easter there is a 'duck race' held : A thousand plastic yellow bath ducks are emptied into the river just behind you in the picture. It's £1 a duck , all proceeds going towards the Community Fund to help good causes in the village. The ducks pass under the bridge, and on down to a string finish line about a hundred yards further down the river. The ducks are all numbered, and if YOUR duck crosses under the string first, you get a prize !
