Over the course of one fateful summer three women must confront decisions they have made in their lives and find peace with themselves and each other. The Wheelwrights are as complex as any family, but nevertheless every summer they come together on Nantucket Island--this is where Nona, the family matriarch, lives. Tensions are running particularly high his year, however, because people perceive the help Nona has recently given Charlotte--her granddaughter who has long struggled to find direction in her life--as unfair favoritism. Charlotte's mother Helen, meanwhile, has her own concerns, trying to come to terms with some dark moments in her past.
