Item description
KENNECOTT CHINO MINES
SANTA RITA / HURLEY SMELTER
SANTA RITA NM
1 HARD TO FIND RECTANGLE SOLID COPPER ASH TRAY
LUNCH BOX COPPER
FROM ESTATE IN BAYARD NM
These are cast in the smelter and Taken home by Mine Employees. These were Referred to as, "LUNCHBOX COPPER," because they were taken home at random in employee's lunchboxes, with, (or without), management's permission.
These particular anodes were actual castings that were pulled from each of the crucible while pouring the assayer's anode to send to the assayer's office for analyzing so that the mine could figure out the actual metal content value of each casting poured from the crucible in the smelter.
These ash trays have ALL THE ORIGINAL metals that were present in the ore that went into the smelter for that particular crucible pour. These may contain, (in addition to copper), Silver, Gold, Molybdenum, Zink, and other metals....
The Smelter was closed in the early 2000's
Kennecott sold out to Phelps Dodge in the 1980's, and they sold to Freeport MacMoran in the early 2000's.
