Item description
A rare 1937 mechanical teddy bear bank by Commonwealth Toy Novelty Co., nicknamed "Hungry Horace." Created as a Nabisco Animal Crackers promotional item, this beautiful collector's piece is known for its unique design: feed it through the mouth and coins drop into a hidden compartment accessed via the back zipper.
? Original brown plush with distinctive aged patina
? Fully functional coin mechanism and zipper compartment
? Original brown/black glass eyes ? not button replacements
? Voice box (pull ring) present but nonfunctional ? typical for age
? Interior clean and solid? no rust
? Arms and legs flex properly at seam joints
This piece still has its original adorable charm and functionality despite age-related fur loss. A truly scarce and spectacular piece with intact internals, solid stitching, original eyes, no tears, and no repairs.
Amazing vintage condition overall, especially for nearly 90 years old. Fur shows expected wear in high-contact areas but remains intact. Mechanism operates perfectly. Zipper glides smoothly. The voice box no longer growls, but this is common for these bears. No loose seams or exposed stuffing.
? Height: ~15"
? Width: ~9"
? Depth: ~5".
.
Comparable examples (even with damage, missing parts, or replaced eyes) have sold or listed between $400?$600+. This bear retains its original eyes, fully functional bank mechanism, intact inner metal chamber, and no seam splits. A standout piece for early toy collectors or advertising memorabilia lovers.
