Item description
Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains??????) is a paper - based ink - wash painting, one of China's ten most renowned and enduring masterpieces. It was created by Huang Gongwang, a painter of the Yuan Dynasty, in 1350.
This horizontal scroll painting vividly portrays the picturesque scenery along the banks of the Fuchun River. Amidst embracing mountains, thatched cottages and villages are scattered, while fishing boats and small bridges are gracefully arranged. Huang Gongwang spent about seven years on this work, from the initial conception to the final completion. To paint it well, he tirelessly traveled along both banks of the Fuchun River, observing the ever - changing clouds and smoke, appreciating the beauty of the rivers and mountains. He carried paper and brush, sketching whenever he encountered captivating scenes. His in - depth observations, genuine experiences, and abundant materials provided a solid real - life foundation for the creation. Coupled with his highly proficient brushwork in his later years, he painted with ease and grace.
This painting is not merely a simple depiction of natural scenery. It represents the artist's spiritual pursuits and expressions, embodying his attitude towards life. Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains is more than just a painting; it is a philosophy and an attitude towards life.
Unfortunately, in the Ming Dynasty, the painting was damaged and torn into two parts when its owner, Wu Hongyu, tried to burn it as a burial object before his death. The shorter part, known as the "Remaining Mountain", is now housed in the Zhejiang Provincial Museum, while the longer part, called the "Scroll of Master Wuyong", is in the Palace Museum in Taipei. In 2011, after being separated for hundreds of years, the two parts were jointly exhibited at the Palace Museum in Taipei.
