U.S. Farm Security Administration

Office of War Information

Color Transparencies from the early 1940s

The Railroad photographs of Jack Delano

By: Larry Miller III.

ISBN: 978-0-9844006-4-5

The photographs of the Farm Security Administration – Office of War Information Photograph Collection form an extensive pictorial record of American life between 1935 and 1944. This U.S. government photography project employed a large group of photographers who were assigned different locations and subjects to record and the photographs were sent in to the home administrative office where they were labeled, numbered and stored. The collection was transferred to the Library of Congress in 1944.

One photographer, Jack Delano, was assigned to several railroad locations to document the day to day work and workers employed during the war efforts. This book is an assembly of selected color transparencies related to the railroads, the workers and the locations documented by Jack Delano, including the Chicago and North Western Railroad, the Chicago, Minneapolis and St. Paul Railroad, the Illinois Central Railroad, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad, Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad, the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Rock Island Railroad.

The color transparencies have been cropped and color adjustments made to bring out the details. No retouching has been performed to alter the historical significance of these images as dust, scratches and even tears are reproduced as they are in the actual scans. The captions, numbers and dates are noted just as they were provided with the stored transparencies. A complete listing of Jack Delano railroad related color photographs is included with a small sample image for reference. Also included on the CD are links to the actual website for additional color and black white photographs contained in the collection, as well as a folder of over 200 color images of Jack Delano color transparencies in jpg format. The images can be inspected, enlarged and/or printed out for personal use. The detail in these photographs is impressive and any railroad historian, collector or fan will enjoy paging through this amazing compilation of World War II era nostalgia of railroading photography.
