The trochus niloticus, also known as Rochia Nilotica, is a large conical shaped sea snail that is harvested commercially for their shells and their meat. They are mostly found in shallow coral reefs in the Pacific and Indo-Pacific regions, in warm waters. They feed on algae as they graze on rocks and coral. Typically the trochus is sold polished with showing their mother of pearl or made into mother of pearl buttons; these shells pictured here with the stripes are how they exist in nature. They would be perfect for beach or ocean decor, for crafts, or for collectors of exotic seashells.
