It?s a significant milestone in a vessel?s life, symbolizing its readiness for duty after construction, launching, and sea trials. During the ceremony, the crew is formally assigned to the ship, the national flag is hoisted, and the ship is declared "in commission." It's a moment of pride, tradition, and celebration, often attended by Navy officials, shipbuilders, dignitaries, and the families of the crew. From that day forward, the ship becomes an active unit of the fleet, ready to take on its missions. The Electric Boat Company, founded in 1899 by Isaac Rice, is a pioneering American shipbuilding firm best known for its role in developing submarines for the United States Navy. Originally partnering with inventor John Philip Holland, the company built the Navy?s first commissioned submarine, the USS Holland (SS-1).
