Item description

Vintage Black and White Photo - July 27, 1918 launch of Socony 200 in New York This is an 8.5 " w x 6.5" h black and white wire service photo - from International Film Service NY. It is of the Socony 200 which was the FIRST concrete oil barge for Standard Oil which had been formed in 1868 in Pittsburg. In 1911 the goverment began to break up the "trust" or monopoly that was Standard Oil and now there are dozens of "successor" companies. This barge was built in Flushing NY and held 250 tons of oil. (it's probably still anchored somewhere. ). Condition Report: The photo has creases on 3 corners - nothing serious as they don't impinge on the photo just on the border. It has some creasing in the middle of the photo too - right above the middle of the barge to the left of the 2 single people seen amidships. and it's slightly yellowed front and back. On the back there is a stamp from the Wire Service and I taped the paper piece that tells "what" the photo is, back onto the back as it had ripped loose.
